Suburban RED
Some of the props and appliances in Suburban RED have been in my mother's house for over forty years or are part of my collection of cameras, and some were obtained or modified for the film.
The idea was to film the project with items from the 1980s and before. This would be part of the autobiographical nature of the project as my childhood and young adult years were lived primarily without the personal computer and the smartphone. All these items pictured above are now found within most smartphones - clocks, film and video recorders, stills cameras, record players, cassette tape players, radios and of course telephones. Each of these items had their own feel to the touch and sound as they were clicked on or off, or were placed - like hanging up the phone or placing the needle on the record. It was a way of exploring and sharing a sense of autobiography through the images and sounds of these products, and their tactile nature.
